MODULE 1

UNDERSTANDING SCHOOL REFUSAL AND SHIFTING PERSPECTIVE

This module, Understanding School Refusal and Shifting Perspective, explores what school refusal means, it’s impact on relationships, and the challenges children may face at school.  Lisa shares her personal journey raising four neurodivergent children, highlighting what has and hasn’t helped them.  She also explains the importance of understanding the role of a child’s nervous system relating to school refusal and offers insights from her family’s experiences to support others.

MODULE 2

APPLYING THIS KNOWLEDGE TO YOUR OWN FAMILY’S EXPERIENCE OF SCHOOL

This module, Applying this Knowledge to Your Own Family’s Experience of School Can’t, explores school expectations and children’s responses.  Lisa shares two strategies for identifying why school can be difficult, and discusses ways to build competence and motivation.  She also examines what parents can control, the signs of burnout, and includes an interview with a demand-sensitive young person who reflects on their childhood challenges and their journey toward a positive future.

MODULE 3

UNDERSTANDING PARENTS’ DIFFERING PERSPECTIVES

This module, Understanding Parents’ Differing Perspectives, explores the challenges parents face when supporting their child experiencing school can’t.  Lisa examines parents’ intentions and perspectives, what prevents them from moving forward together, and introduces the WINS approach.  She explains how to build trust and strengthen relationships with your child and your parent or co-parent, ultimately working towards a shared understanding and plan.

MODULE 4

WORKING WITH SCHOOL

This Module, Working with School, draws on Lisa’s experience as a school social worker and primary teacher to outline the key elements for collaborating effectively with schools.  Lisa shares strategies to understand your child’s views on their ability and enjoyment of school, explains reasonable adjustments and children’s rights, and offers tips on showing up as a professional parent.  She also addresses challenges when the school environment itself is difficult and emphasizes working in the present.  The module includes personal stories from parents who have successfully navigated education to support a positive future for their child.

MODULE 5

THE POWER OF PARENT’S MINDSET

This module, The Power of Parents’ Mindset, explores some of the key stressors of school which may contribute to school can’t, how long the school can’t journey may take, and steps to keeping a consistent mindset along the way.  Lisa discusses the power of knowing you are not alone on this journey.  It looks at using comparison to measure progress and introduces a tool called The Well-being Wheel and the indicators we can use to measure progress.  Lisa guides parents in shifting the meaning they give to the journey, focusing on what they can influence – their relationship with their child, their responses, and the environment – and concludes with reflections on key takeaways from the course.
